Behind the projects. Into the details.
Welcome to the first edition of Around the Boat Shop, a monthly look at the projects, craftsmanship, and people behind the work at Your Boat Shop in Everett, Washington.
From mechanical repairs to paint and restoration, every boat that comes through the shop presents its own challenges. We enjoy sharing a little of that work, showing what goes into a quality repair, and giving boat owners a closer look at the projects that keep us busy.
This month, we're working on an Olympic fishing boat refresh, a Bayliner fuel tank replacement, and a full repaint of a wood-and-epoxy boat. Here's what's happening around the shop.
Featured Project: Refreshing a Classic Olympic
Olympic Restoration In-Progress
We're giving an Olympic fishing boat a comprehensive refresh, combining practical repairs with a few custom touches to make the boat feel like new again.
The work includes several areas:
Gelcoat repairs to address surface damage and restore the finish.
Window rebedding to renew the seals around the windows.
Window-frame repainting to clean up the appearance and finish.
MarineMat flooring to give the deck a fresh, finished look.
Rub Rail Replacement to repair damaged and improve appearance.
Custom exterior striping, painted to match the owner's truck.
One of our favorite details is the custom striping. Matching the stripes to the owner's truck gives the boat a personal touch and ties the whole look together.
It's a good example of what we enjoy about this kind of work: combining the practical side of boat repair with the details that make a boat uniquely its owner's.
We'll share more photos as the project comes together.
Around the Shop: Bayliner Ciera 2452 Fuel Tank Replacement
Fuel Tank Replacement In-Progress
We're also working on a fuel tank replacement for a Bayliner Ciera 2452.
Fuel tank jobs can involve a fair amount of planning and careful work, from accessing and removing the old tank to fitting the replacement and reassembling the surrounding components. In this case we’re cutting out the old tank and installing the new tank in by removing the engine and slightly increasing the size of the engine hatch.
It's not always the most visible improvement on a boat, but maintaining the systems behind the scenes is an important part of keeping a boat dependable.
In Progress: Full Repaint on a Wood-and-Epoxy Boat
A good paint finish starts long before the first coat goes on.
We're undertaking a full repaint of a wood-and-epoxy boat, with careful surface preparation, sanding, repairs, fairing, and masking all playing an important role in the final result.
With this type of project, preparation is just as important as the paint itself. Taking the time to get the underlying surfaces right helps produce a finish that looks good and holds up to life on the water.
We'll follow this project through to completion and share the finished result in a future update.
Planning Ahead for Next Boating Season
Autumn is a good time to start thinking about maintenance and repair projects before the spring rush.
Whether you've got a small repair you've been putting off, a system that needs attention, or a larger restoration in mind, planning ahead can give you more options for getting the work done before boating season arrives.
If you're considering a project for your own boat, we're happy to talk through what's involved.
